need help with a display problem

The problem is that my display 'repeats' at the top of the screen when I use 800 x 600 resolution. I get the entire KDE desktop, with the taskbar and a few icons again appearing at the top.

I can drop to 640 x 480 and the problem disappears, literally, but 640 x 480 isn't an option for a couple of other reasons. The Cirrus Logic card I have can handle 800 x 600 at 16-bit color no problem. From what I can tell though, it doesn't seem to be a card problem as much as it looks like a display problem. It seems as though too many lines are being displayed. I've been through xf86config to no avail.

The system is an old Gateway PC-120. I have the latest BIOS available, 64 mb SDRAM, a 200 MHz processor and a Cirrus Logic GD-5446 video card. The monitor is a generic 17" model.
Though this video card doesn't seem to be supported the display is fine except for this one problem.

I'm going to try another monitor or two just for fun. In the meantime if anyone has any ideas, I'm certainly listening.

BTW, is a Netgear FA311 NIC supported? Thanks in advance for any help.
