Question Need help, use linux to unlock hdd and reinstall xp?

I have an Asus EEE netbook, no cd drive.

Im ruinning off a usb on puppy 5.2.4 i believe and i need to unlock the hdd
The hdd has a password on it, and i dont know it as i bought it from someone.
I was originally going to use wine to use HDDUnlock but that quickly failed.

Now, can someone tell me step by step, on how to unlock this HDD or remove the password?

I can boot and install from the usb but i need the hdd unlocked first so i can install windows xp back on it.

Thanks for reading, and keep it simple! Ive never used linux before,

If you bought it from someone they can give you the password. Unless it's stolen, in which case you are out of luck.

No, they do not know the password as they had a blue screen of death, and after a year or two they forgot their password, but its an actual hdd password. HDDunlock can fix it but i cant get it to run on linux, im just lost alltogether.

That's not much to go on for anyone to help. What exactly did you do and what happened?
Also, if you want to install xp, have you thought about going to a windows/microsoft site?

There is nothing to unlock then, just erase the disk and do a clean install. By the way don't waste time with WinXP which is 15 years old.
Be free install GNU/Linux !!

One possible solution
put DBAN on a usb and boot into
" Dariks Boot And Nuke "
http://www.dban.org/

can you boot from the usb thumb drive?

I was going to put xp on it because that was originally on it.

As for the hddunlock, i downloaded wine and then the hddunlock, installed it and double clicked the .exe for it. I got an error saying cant start.

And ive tried to erase it clean, no luck. Havent tried the boot and nuke though. I will attempt to do that as i can boot fom usb.

Thats how im on puppy linux, its running off a 4gig usb.
I have another usb with xp professional on it so i was going to so that, but when i tried to install, "drive is corrupt" error.

I'll try the boot and nuke thing and let you know how it goes.

i would think something like gparted live-usb would be able to delete the partitions and make new ones. then you can use whatever live-usb (or windows installer -- good luck without a cd drive) to install a new os.

that got me thinking. since cd-roms are no longer manufactured newer pc's tend to have a hidden partition (instead of an oem image cd). you would have to hold down del or f2 or ctrl-s... to access it and start the factory restore.

You're not giving much information on what you have done. You downloaded wine, did you configure it after downloading (see the link below)?

http://www.winehq.org/docs/wineusr-g...nfig-wine-main

Where did you download the hddunlock program? I haven't used wine for years but, I used to just right-click the icon of a program and select Open With and enter "wine" as the program to use.

Why don't you just use the dd command to zero out the drive?

Well i started over on puppy. Its 5.2.8

Now, the unlocker is from hddunlock.com
Can you walk me through how to use it?

First download wine, then the next step is?

If you press F9 while powering up, do you get a Factory Reset option?

Is it a BIOS password, or is the SDD actually password protected.

Do you have a password reset disc (booted from external CD I presume).

Check if the drive is locked, with "hdparm -I /dev/X" where X is the driver's device node.
Hdparm can remove security locking or secure erase the disk, but you need the password.
There are two levels of security, and using the highest, even secure erase may not be allowed without a password. The drive could be frozen.
https://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.ph...ing_a_password

Partedmagic has a secure erase option, but I don't know if it will work without the password.

No, recovery doesnt work since the hdd is locked.

And it says
"Hard disk locked, enter user password: press esc to switch to master password"
