Need help setting environment variables.

I am familiar with the export command. I am using Mepis, logged in as root, and I don't see the .bash_profile, .profile or the /etc/profile so how do I keep these variables?

you can put them directly into /etc/bashrc, and they will affect all users using bash shell...

Good luck,

or of course you can just create whichever files you want to use

man bash gives some info on when each file is read, and there are tons of config file tutorials out there as well.
