Need help playing flv files

I just got a video from my friend, which is in flv. When I try to play it, an error shows up.

The playback of this movie requires a application/xml decoder plugin which is not installed.

What is the problem.

The problem is that "The playback of this movie requires a application/xml decoder plugin which is not installed".

You need to install a player that can handle flv videos. Most of the big ones like mplayer and xine can handle them, usually, although the version your distro (which you failed to mention, btw) provides may not include support for some formats because of "intellectual property" issues.

And for the record, you really need to include more information in your posts. Distro, desktop environment, programs used, things you've tried already; and most important, a thread title that has something to do with the problem at hand. The more you tell us at the outset, the quicker we'll be able to give you a solution.

Please read the first link below in my signature for more advice.

Some distributions avoid certain codes in a default installation for legal reasons, so might have to install such codecs yourself. http://rpm.livna.org has a very good support for non-free codecs (though it is down right now for some unknown reason). If you are using yum or rpm for package installation and updating, then you should install their repository data. Mplayer and Xine tutorials or related webpages usually have the exact list of needed packages and step by step instructions.

Sorry, always forget to mention the distro. It is ubuntu 8.10, Intrepid Ibex. Thanks for the help. Will see if it becomes alright, or I will have to put the video in my comp and convert it to another format.
