Need help, Newbie to linux

I am trying to write a program where a client1 is sending a message through client2 through a server. The sever will prompt a message "how many client(s) is using the server" if we enter 2 clients, how will the server assign a Path ID for each client? Do you know where I can go and get useful information on that subject?
Thanks
John

Why not just use dhcp? You can assign a small range if needs be.

In future, please use more descriptive titles - often the more experienced posters ignore titles like yours.
