Unhappy Need Help Installing

OK so I am stuck and I am hoping that someone can help me out. I have downloaded Red Hat 9 and for some reason it won't boot. I am working on a Dell Inspiron 5150 notebook computer and am just sick of Windows XP.

My system crashed for the second time since I bought it a few months ago and this time was a doozy so instead of dealing with it I formated the drive and downloaded Red Hat 9. I thought that it would be a put the CD in and let it go, but it doesn't detect the CD at all as a bootable drive. I reinstalled Windows XP and am willing to install Red Hat however I possibly can at this point. PLEASE HELP! I am ready to start using a real OS

Thank you!

How did u write the downloaded image of RedHat, what i mean is did u write it as bootable one. Maybe thats the reason why it's not being detected as a bootable device.

Regards,
Hari.

So how did you burn the CD?
What application did you use?
You can not just drag and drop the ISO and burn via XP. Nor will extracting the files then burning work either.

Talking

Flames, yes it is a good idea to make sure that it boots, if you don't then it won't work mate. no harm but a lot of wasted time. I used Nero to write from image to a bootable cd whenever i do anything like this.

have a goodun.

May be the Windows XP blocked any traces of Linux Civilization. That include Redhat CDs.

But since you mentioned that you've installed Windows XP, it means that you already made sure that the cdrom is in the first boot order. I think you should reburn the CD though and make sure it is bootable. I suggest that you use xcdroast instead of using Nero since you have Fedora Core 3 (as in your profile).

Thats right he would have to have his cd rom in boot mode in order to install windows, But i do remember that when i used nero to burn my linux cds that there is a small little check box on the dialog that said something along the lines of burn as an iso drive. i don't remeber but try to burn it again, i heard that sometimes there are error burning iso's.

I have had problems with burning Fedora Core too with Nero. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
