Need help getting online

Man I have tried for three days straight trying to figure out how to get online. First I had to establish if I had a "winmodem" ...pretty sure I do
Then find out what chip set I have, which I still can't figure out.

My PC is: (Dell 8250)
My internal modem is: (Broadcom BCM4212 v.90 56k)
My distro is Fedora

I've plowed countless web pages.
I tried the 'scanModem' program but cannot get it to work. to determine the chip set.
I have also tried 'listModem' which returned multiple unknowns..arg#@*#&
I even opened the machine to physically look at the modem to find out the chipset but can't see it because the sound card is in the way.

I'm gonna lose it here..can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction ? I'd really appriciate it.

Would an external modem solve my problem ?

Thanks,
~T

with an external or a pcmcia modem, you shouldn't have that problem, but take care to check that it is supported before buying it.

I guess you have tried this:

"help for people who has the Broadcom V.92 PCI Internal Modem BCM4212.
It is found probably only in DELL computers.
The driver can be downloaded from the DELL website, but without modification
it works only for some old version of RedHat."
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/arch.../msg01652.html

" Dell has released binary kernel modules for their BCM4212-based modem. It is not known whether they can be adapted to work with the entire BCM421x family"
http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/broadcom/bcm421x.html
