Need help getting linux box operative
 

Need help.....

How do i set up linux on box?

What do i need? How to partition? Boot programs?
Have some linux things, but nothing will work, have found several linux package download sites, but don't know which packages will help me A:boot up
B:set up kernel

Need some help on filename descriptions...

Am on legacy HP vectra 200MMX with 2gig + 128M ram....

Assume have totally blank harddrive.

The simplist method would be to download one of the iso's like Redhat, Suse or Mandrake. They boot from CD which your PC should be able to do. The installer will partition and format the hard drive for you. I would read up on whatever distro you decide before you install to get a good idea of how it works.

In my opinion, Mandrake is easier to install for the less experierced than Redhat. I am new to linux and installed Mandrake 9.0 this week and it basically setup everything for me.

I have both redhat 7.3 and mandrake 9.0
both freeze during install setup(checking partition:hda:)
do not have burner.

are you using the gui install? try a text install, see if it works better. If it still freezes, feel free to come yell at me. lol
