Need help FTP'ing into my web site

Hi,

I'm running Fedore core 4. I set up a web site on the server in /var/www/html/my_website directory.

I then set up a user account for myself and set my home directory to the same directory for the web site i.e. /var/www/html/my_website

When I type my web site's URL, the site comes up but when I try FTP into it, I get the following error:

500 OOPS: cannot change directory:/var/www/html/my_website
500 OOPS: child died
Connection closed by remote host.

Here's the results of ls -l command for the directory for the web site...

total 8
drwxrwxr-x 2 root root 4096 Mar 22 02:48 my_website

What do I need to do to give myself FTP access?

What user is the FTP server running as? What FTP server are you using? Can you put the config file in a pastebin somewhere and link to it for us so we can see? Do the same with the logs for the FTP server.

How do I find out what user FTP service is running as? I'm using vsftpd. I'm new to Linux so I can use some help getting you the info you're requesting. I tried to cut and paste the config file but I was only able to capture the section that fit on the screen. Also where do I find the FTP log file?

I'm sorry that I'm asking some very basic questions but I'm a newbie.

No problems, glad to help. All your log files are in /var/log. Running 'ps aux | grep ftpd' will give you some info about the running ftp daemon, including the user it's running as. You can check your configuration file yourself, just look to make sure everything appears correct, it definitely sounds like a permissions error with the ftpd not having access to /var/www/html/my_website.
