For Linux you should set up a 512M swap partition, a 4G Mandriva / partition, a 4G Fedora / partition, and a 4G empty partition to be used for Mandriva or Fedora upgrades.

I have no idea how big a Windows partition should be.

Whatever is left over you can use to set up a partition for backups and a partition for user data which is shared among the various operating systems.

You could do a search on LQ as this subject has been covered a lot.

Most modern Linux have the means to partition your system so you should be thinking about the layout. If you are going to want to use 'UNIX' then that creates other problems.

Most modern Linux can be used the same as 'UNIX' as for the command level stuff. Your 'X' system will vary between OS.

The M$ Windows OS will want to be the first install so you should load it first. Then resize the hdd to fit the M$ XP/Vista. Once you have that done then you can install the Linux, just make sure to setup the partitions to allow this.
