Need help choosing distribution for WiFI and VNC
 

I am helping a friend with his home recording studio. He needs to be able to control his recording computer, which is in another part of the house, from the actual studio.

So basically we need to use VNC to control his XP computer. The VNC viewer computer is a Pentium III (sorry, that's all I remember off hand) with a D-Link DWL-G510 Revision B, which IS compatable with MadWifi.

Since I have pretty much no Linux experience, I was hoping there was a distribution that came with VNC and MadWifi already installed.

If not, which distribution should I start with?

Which VNC should we use?

Could someone please point me in the right direction?

If you can, try an easy-to-install Debian-based distro, like Ubuntu. Then use Apt or Synaptic to get VNC and MadWifi.

Try SuSE 10.1 which is released recently. It will help you gain experience with Linux.

You can install kvpnc or openvpn during the installation of SuSE.

Regarding MadWifi, you can download it and install yourself, should not be a problem if it supports your wireless card.

Slackware-10.2 is what you want, man. And here's the packages for madwifi and vnc already built for you. All you'll need to do is download the packages for Slackware-10.2, and then install them with installpkg. Just open a terminal and issue as root "installpkg /path/to/package-name" without the quotes and Slackware will install them for you in almost no time.

You can download Slackware-10.2 and then install it very easily. Afterwards, you'll get plenty of help here at LQ in the Slackware forum.

I went with the first reply and so far have had great succes! I installed Ubuntu and I got my wireless card working and am very pleased with the performance of the built-in VNC / Terminal Server Client, especially compared to how slow the machine is.
