If this isn't a homework question, I need to retire from computing altogether...

At LQ, members typically do not give answers/responses to homework questions. This particular question would only require you to install Ubuntu (or any other distribution that includes the GNOME desktop) to get your answer.

I assume you're in a course to teach you Linux. At some point, you will need to install Linux and work the problems/exercises. You will learn much more if you use a Linux install rather than search the Internet for solutions.

You can install Ubuntu within Windows. See this ubuntuforums page. The install will not affect your Windows installation at all.

Alternatively, you can install Linux in a virtual machine. Search the Web for VirtualBox or VMWare. Again, installing Linux on a virtual machine will not affect your Windows install.

Also, if you want members of this community to be as helpful as they can to your specific query, it would help, if you didn't write HELP ME for the title of thread...

Bad: "Help Me!!" or "URGENT"
Good: "Why is my mouse pointer wrong?"
Best: "Mouse pointer distorted on XFree86 4.3 with Geforce FX 5200"
while posting this?
