Need Guidance For OS customization

Hello ,
My name is vikrant, I am a student of CS and i wish to customize a linux distro.
I followed the steps given on the website

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization

but things are not working the way they should.
following the procedure given on the website i end up having an iso file.
But as soon as i try to use it in virtual box , it leads to error saying
FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted :banghead:
tried it 3 times but no success
plz help

What are you running exactly from the command line when you try to boot the image?

I believe u are asking about the image i ended up having after the whole procedure

i was trying to use the image in virtual box to test whether it works or not....

Spell out your words, please. And chances are it's a problem with how you burned the CD/DVD. Did you burn it as an ISO image, or just copy the ISO to the disc? Or did you burn it to a disc, and if not (as corp769 asked), how are you trying to boot from the ISO?

He's said twice that he's trying to use it in VirtualBox.

Right...and trying to use it HOW? Booting the image off hard drive, or via external device?

brianL 03-04-2013 10:36 AM

No idea. He hasn't mentioned that.

Boot the image off hard drive

Have you read the VirtualBox manual? Go through it again, there's a step during installation where you can indicate where your .iso is located.

well... yes i did from
Devices --> CD/DVD devices --> Choose a virtual CD/DVD disk file

Did you pressed F12 on VirtualBox before boot. It will show you list of mediums from which it should boot. Check with command "file yourimage.iso" if it has "bootable" flag.

tried F12 button but no help also i am not aware of the bootale flag

Files with a bootable flag? That is totally new to me and was never necessary when I used Virtualbox.

@#root: Open the settings menu of your VM, change to the "System" tab and make sure that the CD/DVD-ROM option in the boot order is checked. It may be necessary to also make sure that is in before the harddisk in the boot order in case that the harddisk contains already an OS.

Sorry, for bootable flag I mean a "bootable" text appearing when checking file by "file" command.
