Need for Samba

I would like to dump some things that I don't use from my Mepis 2004.03 OS single user PC.

Is samba needed only for networking with Windows or is there more to it than that? I have done some searches both with Google and in forums and it seems to me that it has use only with a Linux/Windows connection, but I would like to know for sure.

Thanks, zoey :study:

samba is for Windows file and Print sharing only, but, if you need any type of netbios resolution youll need to leave it in.
nmba is = to wins, and will only run if smb (samba) is installed

In ur case, you can delete it if you do not need to share files with a windoze machine. However, samba is not just for linux to windoze. It works with any machine that understands the smb protocol. UNIX to Linux, Linux to UNIX, Windoze to Linux, Windoze to Unix, OS2 to Unix etc etc.

Sorry, rakriege, but at the risk of getting flamed I have to say that I have no idea whether or not I need any type of netbios resolution because I don't know what that is.

Bios, I know, but not netbios resolution.

As for nmba being equal to wins and needing smb to run, I believe it if you say so!

Flames don't flash up that frequently here. Especially just for asking questions (unless it something like "Why does Linux suck so much" ;) ).

Netbios resolution is similar to DNS resolution, except netbios resolution works with Windows machine names. If you don't know what it is probably don't need it :D. Besides, if your going to be accessing a windows box from your linux box in some way (other than samba) you can always just add the box name to your hosts file.

Thanks much to both of you!
