Need Display driver package for Xvesa compatible/not Xorg compatible on multiple Dist
Does anyone have any idea how to adapt an existing distro so that it will work with older video hardware?
I want to play around with linux but my fastest computer that is generally very compatible with linux is an old sony vaio laptop that only works with the puppy linux Xvesa video drivers. I tried an FTP install of Debian or Ubuntu, but I forget which because I've tried both and both failed, and with one of them I got this odd bug that made the screen flash like when my old crashed Apple IIe needed to be reset.
I have heard of some things that should work, I talked to a guy that teaches Security Science and he said "Framebuffer works with everything" but the way I understand it, framebuffer is not used as the basis of a GUI in any recent popular distro.
Welcome to linuxquestions.org!
What video chipset are you using? If you don't know, can you post the output of "lspci" without the quotes in a terminal?
