Chocolate.......

Seriously....there is no one right answer. Look at the recent poll results here at LQ, and at the "hit list" at http://distrowatch.com

My "getting started' link below might help also.

Fedora

Thought it totally depends on your requirements,i would suggest you fedora as you are shifting from windows to linux.

try them all .... you could try Debian its very easy to install and get running and tons of packages check it out!

PCLinux and Ubuntu are very popular these days. Both have good qualities for those new to linux. Alot of distros offer live CD, which is an excellent way to take a distro out for a test drive before you commit to installing to HD.

My personal favorite is Mandriva.

harsshal 02-27-2008 11:32 PM

best thing is to try live CDs. That way u wont have to install actual stuff and u can try almost all thing in the distro.

try slackware

sometimes i am thinking about such a letter an linus torvalds..

hey linus,
you are a hero that you have created something like linux, now be a hero again and specify a linux distro as an official starter..

anyway my answer to this question, you could start even with gentoo(impossible to install for the most of the end-users) if you are motivated to learn about linux..or you can start with ubuntu, it is really easy and a good Operating System. I think it is like entering the swimming pool, you should just jump on it without thinking..install ubuntu, use it for some time, if you don't like it install something else..

My personal advice is Mepis or PCLinuxOS to start.

I love Slackware and it's great, but if you're not already familiar with computers and comfortable with doing things without being warned that it will break your system, don't use it (unless you just install everything). That said, many people have started with Slackware and done fine. Plenty of others could have started with Slackware and been fine. It depends on your level of experience--not necessarily with Linux but just computers/software in general.

Naveen Dirk- Please don't hijack threads. Create a thread for your problem. Also, there is no "Linux 9."

Disclaimer: Personal opinion. YMMV.

I'll put in a vote for KUbuntu. Why? I needed a liux box to do some development and googled and came up with KUbuntu. Installation was easy, actually couldn't be easier and had apache, php, MySql running within minutes. I told my associate who is in love with Debian about it and he made the switch and now we are working on some enterprise solutions using it.

I know nothing about the different distros but KUbuntu has virtually 0 learning curve.

The distros most commonly offered as beginner distros are:

Mepis, PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Mint.

They all come in the form of a Live CD. You might also install Virtualbox or VMWare inside Windows, then install one of the above distros inside it.

Tinkster 02-28-2008 01:50 PM

slackware, of course. :}

brianL 02-28-2008 01:57 PM

Vanilla = Slackware
Chocolate = Ubuntu
Raspberry Ripple = Debian
Mint = Mint

You don't have to be so polite and nice you know.
Actually, if there is a good place to put an incoherent thread-hijacking question, it's in a "Which Distro" thread.

To the OP ... Debian, of course. That what I use so it must be the best for you as well.
