Need advise setting up CentOS server for intranet
 

Hi everyone.

I am an artist working in a small animation studio. We have no IT guy... I happen to know a little bit of programming so I just got assigned into this position to look after this server box running Cent OS.

I got myself books about basic linux but there are still a few things requested from me and I really need some advise. I appreciate if anyone can help point me to the right direction.

1. My boss wants a centralized log in. We have about 15 workstations right now running windows 7 and Fedora. They're not set up as domain yet. Will setting up Radius on Cent OS be enough? Are there other packages I should be aware of? Will Windows work stations be able to join it as domain?

2. Our client is using RSync to remotely update files from us from over sea. There were couple times that RSync just didn't went through and I was told to try maximize the process - making the RSync working as smooth as possible. This I admit I'm totally clueless. What should I be look for? What words should I google?

Well if you want single sign on with linux or a single repository for users you can use Radius I believe, not sure how Windows would use it though. The Domain way could work by creating a windows domain and windows Radius server for the Linux servers/clients to read. Another option is to use LDAP or OpenLDAP, again not sure how windows would use open ldap as a login point. We use Novell OES which integrates LDAP with eDirectory(user repository) and has a client for Windows and that does work pretty well. So there are several ways, if you are looking at all free stuff I would look at open ldap and integrating your Linux servers with your Windows servers via Samba. I have never personally done this so I am not 100% positive how it would work but from reading through stuff it seems that would be a way to go.

Thanks blittrell - sounds like it is going to be a lot more complicated than I thought. If I start experimenting with Radius, will it be possible to migrate to other packages later?

You have both linux and Windows Clients. You should use Samba as Domain controller and LDAP as accounts repository. Even you can setup file sharing with Samba.
