Need advice on FASTEST distro for video editing?
I'm relatively new to Linux, and have Mandrake 8.1 installed right now. It doesn't seem all that fast, and I would like some input on which distro I should use to edit video and compose / mix music on? Should I go wtih Mandrake 8.2 or something else? Maybe Debian or Redhat, etc.?
I'm running a PIII-600 w/ 384MB Ram, 60GB 7200RPM HDD, ATI Radeon 7500 w/ 64MB DDR, ATI Tv card, SB Audigy. What I'm trying to do is capture from old VHS and convert file to DivX, then burn to CD-R. Also, anyone have any programs to recommend for this? Thanks for any info. Jed |
there isn't a fastest distro. you can make thigns faster by running only the services you want, and by building a specialised kernel, but generally it'll go as fast as your box can.
as for copy video's. check the "vcr" program, does exactly what you want. |
Ok. That makes sense. It's just that some people said Mandrake was slow, so I didn't want to run a "slow OS" - I mean that's why I'm switching from the bloated Windows!
But maybe I'll go with Mandrake 8.2, as it's probably just what I need - with XFS for the video files and all. Thanks, Jed |
