Natty Narwhal error message

Hello All,
Firstly, this a new endeavor for me. I have installed the latest Ubuntu .. all works great .. however, it's installed on a Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop, and when I attempt to connect wirelessly, I get this message .. "Unable to mount location ... Failed to retrieve share list from server."
When the computer boots up, it tells me there is a wireless service available ... but won't recognize any of the local services in the area .. and there are a few, not to mention my own LAN .. and in Networking, there is an empty folder .. Can anyone shed some light?

Might need some clarification on this:

On the taskbar, usually in the bottom right hand of the screen, there's a network icon; you should be able to "Add a Connection"... or at least that's the way it used to be on Ubuntu 10.10, which the last one I messed with... If you see those, are the wireless options greyed out? I presume you can see/edit your wired connection on the machine.
