named not starting

shifted to fedora core2 today. when i use
# service named start,
the follwoing error appears..........
rndc : connect failed: connection refused

and for # rndc reload,
the follwoing error appears..........
rndc : connect failed: connection refused

I am just running caching only name server with a forwarder entry in /etc/named.conf . Also the 2 zone files in /var/named r fine.

Are you sure that named is not running? It sounds like you may not have rndc configured, which will not affect named starting/running. Check with ps to see if named is running.

See http://www.netadmintools.com/art25.html and/or http://www.ms.washington.edu/Docs/Li...bind-rndc.html for some config ideas for rndc.

ps shows everything ok but...

with # ps , it shows named is running. i donot know much about rndc. i have not touched anything related to rndc. someone told me to run # rndc reload after u amend zone files and /etc/named.conf . since, i had to configure for the first time, i wanted to run # rndc reload. incase , named is running, it must show while # service named status. whenever i run # service named stop|restart|start, # ps -e also changes accordingly. but why its not showing in the terminal ??? it must show while # service named status that .....named is up and running.

in order to get rndc working, you need to configure it to work with named. Look at http://www.ms.washington.edu/Docs/Li...bind-rndc.html for instructions on how to configure rndc. In the meantime, if you make any changes to any zone files, you can also send a HUP signal to the running named to force it to reload the zone files (but don't forget to update the serial # in the SOA first).
