nagios installation

Hello Sirs:

I'm new in the world of linux but I already understand it. My Boss ask me to put up a Nagios machine to our monitorring, I try to install it following the procedure in the Nagios website, bust still no lock of making it running.

Can you give me some points on how to start or even a small documantation host I can test for example my local machine.

At the moment I have'nt start yet the nagios, when i issue the $ service nagios start... it say that I have a configuration error on nagios.cfg.

Please help..

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

I've split out your post from the other thread; please do tell which
part of the documentation you were unable to follow, so we can give
you well-targeted guidance.

Cheers,
Tink

Well, if there's a configuration error in nagios.cfg, posting it may help :)

Or perhaps check their docs? http://www.nagios.org/docs/

Things look okay - No serious problems were detected during the pre-flight check

seems to be ok, then i command

[root@nagios-server nagios]# service nagios start
Starting nagios:CONFIG ERROR! Start aborted. Check your Nagios configuration.

I already enable the httpd, I can access the web interface to other machine, but if i click on the function ie Tackical Overview, i got this maessage:

Whoops!

Error: Could not read object configuration data!

Here are some things you should check in order to resolve this error:

1. Verify configuration options using the -v command-line option to check for errors.
2. Check the Nagios log file for messages relating to startup or status data errors.

Make sure you read the documentation on installing, configuring and running Nagios thoroughly before continuing. If all else fails, try sending a message to one of the mailing lists. More information can be found at http://www.nagios.org.

Please help and guide, so desperate, I really nagios to work

It says to check the nagios log file. Did you check it? Look in for some errors. If you do not understand, just post them here.

Nanie desribe step by step what you have done, clearly.
Did you install all the prerequisite perl modules??
Goto nagios.cfg and check
Where are the command definitions pointing to?
Where are the service definitions pointing to?
Check the nagios user and group, do they exist?
Have you checked nagios log file. Report on errors?
The service will not start if information is incorrect.

Maybe it is worth erasing all and start again slowly.
