mysqld deamon failure

Hi guys.

Any clue from the below logs?

I have to emphasize dhe this the very first start of the service as it is newly installed. Maybe there should be a post-installation configuraton.

[root@webserver-fib mysql]# /etc/init.d/mysqld start
Initializing MySQL database: /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions: line 494: /usr/bin/mysql_install_db: No such file or directory
[FAILED]
chown: cannot access `/var/lib/mysql': No such file or directory

There are various mysql packages.
I suppose you are interestes in the mysql-server package.
Try
#rpm -qa |grep -i mysql

Hi guys,

I managed to restart the deamonn, but i am having difficulties in accessing the database remotelu through mysql Query Browser. I give there its static IP 192.168.2.232 but I cannot log in.

I tried to configure my.cnf file. I copied as following

[bash]# cp /etc/my.cnf /etc/my.cnf.original
[bash]# cp /usr/share/doc/mysql-server-?.??.??/my-small.cnf /var/lib/mysql/my.cnf

But now I am not sure which file to edit. The one under /etc or the other one under /var/lib/mysql.

The one under /etc/ has very few lines and it seems missing something
[mysqld]
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
bind-address = 192.168.3.232
# Default to using old password format for compatibility with mysql 3.x
# clients (those using the mysqlclient10 compatibility package).
old_passwords=1

[mysql.server]
user=mysql
basedir=/var/lib

[mysqld_safe]
log-error=/var/log/mysqld.log
pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid

All I want to do is to configure the lines that belong to:

Server Name
Port
User
Password

...in order to access it remotely by its static IP

THanks guys
