Show logs (just after trying to start service)
Code:
tail -n 50 /var/log/syslog
tail /var/log/mysql/*
tail /var/log/mysql.err
tail /var/log/mysql.log

Is it running?
Check with
Code:
sudo ps -fea | grep mysqld
If it is running and your mysql root password is the issue, then see http://askubuntu.com/questions/69380...reconfigure-it
keyword "reconfigure".
YMMV

No logs? Do you have installed syslog or other log daemon? Maybe try with "sudo" before these commands. Can you show list of files in /var/log
Code:
ls -la /var/log

What distribution are you using? You may find that the server daemon is mysqld not mysql

Have you tried:
Code:
sudo service mysqld start
