MySQL Problem in RH7.1

Hi people,
I am totally new to Linux. I am developing a website that uses PHP and MySQL. For local testing and development, I want to use MySQL on Linux. When I type safe_mysqld, the daemon starts (or atleast, it seems to start), displays a message about the .sock it is using and then, it ends. It just does. It says mysql ended. I tried chmod 777 the mysql directory. That didn't help. Anybody please? I'll be more than glad if anyone could tell me how to configure Apache on Linux to handle PHP. When I open a PHP page in Konqueror, it shows the code. :-(
Thanks very much,
Bye
