mySQL problem

I am trying to set up mySQL by following a guide on www.vbulletin.com, but when i try:

chown -R mysqlusr.mysqlgrp var

i get:

root@*****:/usr/bin# chown -R mysqlusr.mysqlgrp var
chown: failed to get attributes of `var': No such file or directory
[1]+ Exit 127 safe_mysqld --user=mysqlusr

Can someone tell me what's wrong?
