mysql on debian sarge

I tried to install mysql on debian and found out that mysql packages were not included in the cds as in Fedora..

I did some reserch on the net and got two packages from the debian website (client and server packages). however Im getting problems to install them.

Have I missed any important package that needed to be installed along with the client and the server package?

Where can I eventually find (on the net) a complete mysql package, preferably one that has already been converted for debian(.deb)

thnx!

Can't you use the software on http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/5.0.html?

Can you tell me what is going wrong? The client (mysql) and server (mysqld) should suffice, except if you're
connecting to MySql from websites, programs (Java, C++, etc), in which case you might need additional drivers/tools.

Do you get any error messages?
Have you confirmed that the server is running? The client won't work if the server isn't running or is inaccessible.

mysql on debian sarge

here are the errors I'm getting when trying to start mysql:

Thierry:/etc/rc.d/init.d# mysqld start
060312 22:55:27 Warning: Can't create test file /var/lib/mysql/Thierry.lower-test
mysqld: Can't change dir to '/var/lib/mysql/' (Errcode: 2)
060312 22:55:27 Aborting

060312 22:55:27 mysqld: Shutdown Complete

any idea about what could be the problem?
