mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' exists!

Well, does netstat -l show mysql ? If not is it not running or hasn't bound a port/unix socket

What distro? How did you install it?

Try:
/etc/init.d/mysqld restart

Lightbulb

I had the same problem.Did you try doing this :

cd /usr/local/mysql/ ( or wherever mysql is installed )

bin/mysqld_safe &

This fixed my problem.

Another work around (Hee-hee) is to mv /tmp/mysql.sock /var/lib/mysql/

I'm trying to find a better way to fix this problem.

If you need more info on anything I said tell me.
I hope I helped.
