My task bar has disappeared
Hi,
I got Linux a few days ago, and all of a sudden my task bar had disappeared and I cant get it back. I read another thread which said to type "dcop kicker panel restart" but the terminal just says "call failed". Is there any way to sort this out because I dont know any other way to get at my programs! Thank you, David |
Has it disappeared for all users or just the one???
I bet it only accounts for one user account. You might just want to create a new one and move any files you've made over to it, then delete the old user account. That's probably easier than fixing your problem. |
delete the root?
It has only affected one user - the root!
When I log on as root is says that the kde panel crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV) and it may be due to an bug/error. I get this info: Using host libthread_db library "/lib/tls/libthread_db.so.1". [Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled] [New Thread 1095690752 (LWP 5241)] [KCrash handler] #7 0x407919ee in KCmdLineArgs::isSet () from /opt/kde3/lib/libkdecore.so.4 #8 0x41a4479a in MapWidget::load () from /opt/kde3/lib/kde3/ww_panelapplet.so #9 0x41a383e7 in KWWApplet::KWWApplet () from /opt/kde3/lib/kde3/ww_panelapplet.so #10 0x41a386ba in init () from /opt/kde3/lib/kde3/ww_panelapplet.so #11 0x416b8bfe in PluginLoader::loadApplet () from /opt/kde3/lib/libkickermain.so.1 #12 0x4165135e in InternalAppletContainer::InternalAppletContainer () from /opt/kde3/lib/libkdeinit_kicker.so #13 0x41651658 in PluginManager::createAppletContainer () from /opt/kde3/lib/libkdeinit_kicker.so #14 0x416521ab in ContainerArea::loadContainerConfig () from /opt/kde3/lib/libkdeinit_kicker.so #15 0x4165309d in ContainerArea::initialize () from /opt/kde3/lib/libkdeinit_kicker.so #16 0x41653100 in Panel::initialize () from /opt/kde3/lib/libkdeinit_kicker.so #17 0x41658828 in Kicker::Kicker () from /opt/kde3/lib/libkdeinit_kicker.so #18 0x41659a16 in kdemain () from /opt/kde3/lib/libkdeinit_kicker.so #19 0x0804e7a6 in launch () #20 0x0804eebc in handle_launcher_request () #21 0x0804f479 in handle_requests () #22 0x0804fc5a in main () I have no idea what this means, but I am guessing that I can't delete the root to fix the problem. I have tried Alt+F2 then kicker but I get the same message. Any other wisdom would be appreciated! |
ReInstallation is the shortest way to get away of the problem...

what is your desktop environment? i encountered that problem
in gnome and everytime i encounter it again i just remove all .gnome folder in my home directory and restart gnome. i do this even if there is wrong in my gnome desktop to reset the gnome configuration! £Ä3 |
