My sound system is not working neither my microphone

I have a dell inspiron 14z , I am using the ubuntu 11.04 32 bits. My sound system is not working neither my microphone.

My sound system is not working neither my microphone.Everything was working previously but now it is not!
Here is my ALSA information:

Your ALSA information is located at http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=8e...0d746b48f9e66b

I tried the SoundTroubleshootingProcedure in the web-site:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/So...otingProcedure , for ubuntu 11.04 however the message appeared:

E: Unable to locate package linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.38-13-generic-pae
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.38-13-generic-pae'

and it stopped.

Thank you in advance.

I suggest booting to a Live CD of something or other and testing the sound. If it works, that narrows the likely problem to your software load; if it doesn't, there may be hardware issues.

Also, what changed--what was installed or uninstalled or upgraded--between the last time it worked and now?

I tried that before.

I tried run a CD and I can hear anything, I am sure that the volumes are at maximum.

Well I could hear through the speaker before but my microphone was not working (I have dual-boot and in windows everything work!) then I tried to fix it. As you can see in my last e-mail the versions of my drivers (ALSA) don`t match up. So I download the version 1.0.24 and I tried to install following the installation procedure inside the package. When I installed I got two problems, first my ALSA driver was not up-dated to 1.0.24 and my sound system stopped working.
Thank you for the attention.

My Dells have hardware volume buttons on the function keys. I've never had a problem with them in Linux--I've never had them do anything in Linux, for that matter--but they might be worth testing.

Since it's Ubuntu, have you checked your Pulse Audio settings? Ubuntu layers Pulse on top of ALSA.

I can't tell you exactly where to find them in Ubuntu 11.x, but you could look in the finder thingee for "mixer"; that should turn it up.

What has changed since you first got this working and when you had problems?
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu...uestion/172304
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu...uestion/184639

Perhaps you should allow your distribution a chance to sort this out?
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu...uestion/189655

The last post suggests some sort of failed updating/reinstallation issue, best handled by your distribution.

Perhaps just enjoy your music in Windows in the meantime?

Unhappy Well I can use windows in the meantime ..

however I work in the laptop and sometimes I have to run a program which lasts almost 24h ..so I cannot switch to windows in the meantime. I got stuck with it.

I tried all the solutions posted before allend, but it did not work.

Thank you guys.

The only solution to make microphone work is to install linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic...

Just go to:

Menu / System / Administration / Synaptic Package Manager

And search and mark for installation:

linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic

tip: if you have multiple versions click on the first and read the description which should inform what name to install...

If after the reboot and mic mute is off, still does not work, just go to terminal and type:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

and add or change the following:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto enable=yes

Then Ctrl+X, type Y to write and exit, reboot and mic will work.

Bye and have lots of fun with Ubuntu (the best).
