I have the same problem with XMMS and Mandrake 9.2. My CD player works fine. Good sound, but XMMS is all distorted and staticy. Anything we can do?I have a SoundBlaster 512 card and works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't . A couple of weeks ago when I was running XMMS under KDE 3.1 it worked fine and I decided to try Gnome and XMMS now has terrible sound. I also can't get my Video DVD's to work. Patience is really necessary with Linux.

I had this problem and with a little snooping around I was able to fix it.
Open up KMix and it will show you a buch of volume controls.

This might not be the best way to go about it but it won't screw anything up, so you are safe

Start turning off the volumes one by one. If the sound goes completly off, turn it back on, if nothing happens move to the next one. Mine had a default setting of a line input on, turning it off fixed it
