My Redhat 8.0 server will not bring up the gui

I have Redhat 8.0 installed and wanted to install the XFree86-Xvfb-4.2.0-72.i386.rpm. In the beginning of the install, it asks (or recommends) you to make a copy of /usr/X11R6. So, I quit out of the install...to make a bkup of X11R6. Instead of copying the directory to tape/cdrom/floppy, I attempted to make a bkup on the actual disk, by using the cp command. All of a sudden, error messages were popping up telling me a fatal error has occured and Gnome is going down. After that (Friday 2nd), I haven't seen Gnome...or any gui for that matter. I am working on the command line. When I have rebooted the server messages such as the following appear:
/sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_host adapter, errno=0 Loading cpqarray module
failed
&
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/usb/usb-uhci.0 failed

Also, when I am logged on the following message appears on occasion:
INIT=id 'X' respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes.

Wondering if anyone can provide some insight?

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
