My problems
Hello!
I have been using Redhat 9.0 for a while, but I never configured almost anything. Now I think I should optimize my system... First of all, how do I get rid of packages I don't need? If I try to use Add/Remove applications, then it says I have some packages missing to remove packages. It really confuses me... why do I need packages to remove packages... Then I need to know what RPM's are necessary to use Internet and read e-mail. Of course I want desktop to look nice with it's background and taskbar backgrounds.... and then I want to know how to remove these packages I do not need. And of course, I want my system up to date. What I have to do for that? My goal is to make Linux optimized and minimize errors. Less programs, less mess. |
To get your system uptodata it going to take downloading fedora 3 as RH9 is not supported and FC3 will install right over RH9
The best way is to do a new install and dont check install everything. I recommend that you install everything as you are new to linux and need GUI for most everything and if you don't install them at first it can be a pain. Also its good cause you get all the GCC+ stuff for compiling different programs from scratch. If you do not have the space which is about 6-8gigs for a full install let me know as I am doing an install of FC3 tomorrow and I will let you know what you need for most of the basics. This is just for desktop use and not server use right? = |
Yes, it is a desktop computer. But I have a little problem. I don't have a CD writer. Actually I don't have even a CD reader right now. That's why I don't use Fedora. And my hard drive is 4GB, from what 300MB is free.

go to system settings - server settings - services
From there switch to the runlevel that you use. I assume that you use 5 for the GUI. turn off all services that you are not using and then save it. Then you can manually stop them from there as you uncheck them or from a CL using (service nameofprogram stop) this help optimise perfromance, but I'd go to FC3 to get the new 2.6. kernel |
What part of europe do you live in, I may be able to get them burnt and sent to you.
|
I live in Estonia. But I guess there isn't need for that. Because I will visit my sister tomorrow and I can download Fedora with her laptop and burn it to CD. And then I must get my father to get a IDE cable for my CD device because I sliced it. :p
Thanks for being so helpful! |
Fedora is just the same as RH but with newer bells and whistles. Come back to this thread or email me and I'd be happy to help.
