My Old Acer Aspire 1200X
 

Hi All,
I have an old Acer aspire 1200x 1GHz intel processor, 128MB SDRam 20GB HDD and a 24x cdrom. It has windows xp on it and I would like to find a linux distribution that I could run on it instead. It cannot boot from the usb. If possible I'd like to install it directly over the internet. I tried Ubuntu , but it needs too much ram. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Lubuntu, Puppy, AntiX and Slitaz. It depends upon what you want to use if for. If you google "linux on older computers" you will get a lot of hits to search.

if you still want to use boot from USB, try plpbt (Plop-Bootmanager).
I think ram requirement largely depends on what 'GUI' you use. So forget about KDE or GNOME and use something like xfce.
I'd upgrade the RAM, if possible, should not be too expensive.

Seriously look into upgrading RAM (most likely it uses PC133, which is real easy/cheap to obtain) and then choose the most lightweight window manager you can get used to. XFCE might even be a little too heavy. Crunchbang and Archbang are really nice distros for older PCs that use Openbox as default, and on a machine I have that's similar to yours, Archbang is far and away the better performer of the two.

I'd suggest an older version of Slackware, they are still supported with updates. Maybe 12.2 with fluxbox will work.

The advantage of Slackware is that you can install it via Internet. You can create your own install-CD (minimal without packages) like here ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/slackwar...nux/README.TXT explained.

It is also possible to download the packages before the installation and install them from an external drive.
