Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Intel Integrated Graphics? If so, your issue may be something to do with that. There seems to be a bug in modern distros that is causing random freezing, usually more common when using a desktop environment that uses effects, (such as Cinnamon).
If it's Integrated graphics, i think the only thing you can really do is try to keep the xserver-xorg-video-intel package as up to date as possible. I'm using Debian stable, and i also experience a similar issue with the Cinnamon Shell. Since updating that package to the version from Experimental, the issue has improved, but not gone away. There is a later version available as source, but i'll wait. You're running Mint; there is a later version available in the Ubuntu repos, than the one i'm using, you might want to try upgrading with that package.
Distribution: Debian Wheezy, Jessie, Sid/Experimental, playing with LFS.
You say you've had this problem for 4 months now. Have you tried a different distro or even Mint with a different Desktop Environment?

This could merely be a momentary problem either with the server or they are updating the server (packages files) and because of that there are no actual files to read.
