Intel Integrated Graphics? If so, your issue may be something to do with that. There seems to be a bug in modern distros that is causing random freezing, usually more common when using a desktop environment that uses effects, (such as Cinnamon).
If it's Integrated graphics, i think the only thing you can really do is try to keep the xserver-xorg-video-intel package as up to date as possible. I'm using Debian stable, and i also experience a similar issue with the Cinnamon Shell. Since updating that package to the version from Experimental, the issue has improved, but not gone away. There is a later version available as source, but i'll wait. You're running Mint; there is a later version available in the Ubuntu repos, than the one i'm using, you might want to try upgrading with that package.

You say you've had this problem for 4 months now. Have you tried a different distro or even Mint with a different Desktop Environment?

This could merely be a momentary problem either with the server or they are updating the server (packages files) and because of that there are no actual files to read.

My advice at this time would be to try another desktop environment on Mint see if that fixes the problem.

The question was right: How can I keep linux mint "cinnamon" from hanging...

The final answer:

You can't. it's been a problem in linux mint since version 13. Something changed after version 12. This is a problem across a wide variety of hardware of all different kinds.

Changing video drivers, video cards, motherboards, etc., does not help.

The only thing that works: get rid of cinnamon and use "mate" or some other deskop.

Cheers,
D
