Hi friends..

I quit using Windows 2000 (very fast and CPU efficient on my machine) and installed fedora 9 Sulphur release. But it is too slow on my machine (Celeron 733Mhz with 100Mhz main board bus, 320MB RAM, 20GB HDD, 8MB graphics RAM).

When i installed mp3 decoder for totem player and rhythmbox, the CPU consumption went extremely higher while playback so that even if i move the mouse pointer on the screen, then that results in interrupt in play back. That means too slow with CPU utilization close to 100%.

Could any one please suggest a faster linux distro suits for my machine with an mp3 player that consumes less CPU while playing.

Also, if possible i would like to know why applications on linux normally consumes more CPU than applications on windows. Is this has something to do with their specific multithreading implementation?

First of all, i thank you for your advice. Earlier i tried Ubuntu 6.10 EdgyEft and i like it, but the most disappointing thing is that where can i find suitable packages for EdgyEft.

If you can, please guide me in this also.. i do not have an internet connection too.

I felt really sad on hearing this:

Just apt-get install or aptitude install always help me installing new package in a seconds.
Always try tweaking with /etc/apt/sources.list for adding new entries.

You can always post your package issue here if any.
For me,it has been 2 years and i am fan of Ubuntu installation.

You can go for latest Version of Ubuntu for rapid updation.

Ubuntu Installation is rather fast than other distros.

Ubuntu has got its package manager called synaptic. You can use it to install all the packages that you want. Another thing is that 6.10 now is too old and you should give a newer version a try. 8.10 Intrepid is the newest right now but you can still use 8.04 Hardy as it is LTS version. It will be supported for 3 years.

I too usually have ubuntu 8.04 at my terminals...Thats good to work with.

I have been installing distro's like crazy since I got my new computer and I would have to recommend the xubuntu, light weight version of ubuntu. Built with special care for the slower/older computers in mind. Installs well.

I am also very happy of installing Interpid release. But i would like to say that the version came after EdgyEdt hanged while loading the desktop. Then i can only dream interpid. Another funny thing is that i have only 8MB graphics RAM and a 733Mhz processor with 100Mhz onboard bus.

From my experience my computer can bear only upto EdgyEft!

you could install a Distro based around Lxde

Or you can try what I have done tried
Download Debian net install
install it ,but at package selection..choose just to install standard and laptop if its a laptop..but unselect desktop..This will give you a base Debian install minus xorg and a desktop..then you can apt-get install lxde alsa
It will install it along with gdm ...It makes for a snappy system..

There is a new distro based on ubuntu. it is called crunchbang linux.

I've listen to some linux podcast and they seem to praise this distro.
They say its lightweight and fast.

I also suggest you buy more ram. Ram is getting cheaper every day and you will notice improve performance by adding extra ram.

Try Puppy linux..........this puppy will run circles around most other distros and just always works for me when other distros give me trouble..........and you can try bfr you install it by running from live cd (slower this way but gives you a feel for it)

If you want a light distro, Ubuntu is NOT that distro.

Try DSL, puppy, TinyMe,

You can then go for Xubuntu that uses Xfce rather than gnome or kde. It is much lighter than those biggies. If that is also not the answer then you have choice of DSL or puppy. Those are very small. Even zenwalk is good on slower machines. It also uses Xfce. But if you can spend some bucks buying some memory is not a bad idea.
