I'm having the same issue, Graphical login, but black screen except for a cursor

I'm running Kubuntu 9.10 and I get the "log in" chimes and cursor when loading into my KDE session, but nothing else. Everything else works, for example I can drop into tty1 and fiddle around, and I can load Gnome. I didn't see anything strange in my /tmp folder such as a X0-lock. so I'm going to look into my /home/. files to see if I can clear the previous session. I will let you know if I resolve the issue, and please let me know if you have found a resolution as well

messy, but it works

Something in one of kde's configuration files got fouled up. Not which one, I did surgery with a sledge hammer.

In a manner, I started my kde configuration over from scratch, but saved the original for later inspection.

kiruja, in your home folder /home/kiruja there are hidden directories which start with a period " . "

I opened my Konsole, also called terminal and typed in the command
mv .kde/ .kde_old

There should be a space between .kde/ and .kde_old.
The mv stands for "move" and I just moved the old name to a new name. Next time I restarted KDE, it worked just find, except that it lost off of the configurations I had made before.

Anyone have a better solution?

It's probably only a lockfile. Searche kde forums. Every conceivable error should be there. I haven't used kde since the last millenium, but going on what I knew then, I think it would be typically 20 folders deep in a luser-session folder.

Well it could easily be a Xorg problem. I have had issues with this in the past. It could be the graphics drivers. If it is not this it has to be something with the graphics. Again, I know this from experience since I always upgrade my graphics card and I have had to deal with the Xorg area for around a year and a half now. Best of luck to you!
