My hard drive is not recognized.

I need help getting any Linux distribution to find my hard drive. Right now, I am using Crunchbang Linux. I have also tried Lubuntu, Slitaz, and Puppy Linux, none of which can find the hard disk either. I think that part or all of the reason for this may be because I incorrectly reformatted the hard drive using GParted (the hard drive currently has no partitions). I don't know if this will help, but here is the output of fdisk -l:

Code:
Disk /dev/sdb: 4012 MB, 4012900352 bytes
120 heads, 55 sectors/track, 1187 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 6600 * 512 = 3379200 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 * 1 1188 3918832 c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
As you can see, all fdisk can find is my Live USB. I need either GParted or fdisk to be able to recognize my hard drive in order to partition (as far as I know --- maybe there's another way?) and install Crunchbang.

FYI: My laptop has a 1.4 GHz Celeron processor, 448 MB of RAM, and 37 GB of disk space.

Any and all relevant suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Hi,

Looking at the output you posted I see that the usb stick is assigned to /dev/sdb. Storage devices normally start with /dev/sda, so there is a chance that your hard disk is physically recognized.

What is the output of the following commands (as root user):
Code:
fdisk -l /dev/sda

dmesg | grep sda

ls -l /dev/sda*

Hello Clex19,

I agree with druuna, but additionally I'd like to see the output of
Code:
lspci -k
I suspect that there is any disk-controller not recognized (no driver available on the linux-CDs).

Could you please provide more information about the computer? is there Windows installed on it? does it work?

Markus

I'm not sure what more information you need about my computer. Like I said, it's a laptop (Toshiba Satellite A85-S107), which is maybe 7 or 8 years old, I'm not sure.

Here's the history of my problems with this (as much as I can remember now):

My laptop had Windows XP installed before I tried Lubuntu. After a few days, GRUB was having problems; it couldn't read the disk or something like that. For some reason, I couldn't reinstall Lubuntu, so I tried Slitaz, which, once I went through the installation process and restarted my comp, would not boot up (however, during the installation, it *did* recognize the hard drive). I thought I installed Slitaz on the wrong partition, so I used GParted to delete it. Next, I created a new partition to replace the one I deleted, and I tried installing Slitaz on a different partition. That failed as well, so I decided to try Puppy. I wanted a lightweight distro. Also I wanted to see if I could find an installer that would automatically create or delete whatever partitions were necessary. But I found out that Puppy wanted to know which partition to install itself on. At this point, it still could find the hard drive, but I decided to erase everything on the hard drive (can't remember if I used GParted or fdisk) and start fresh. That was a huge mistake on my part. When I tried to make new partitions in Puppy with GParted, it said that I needed to create a new partition table. I tried using GParted to accomplish that; I told it to make a msdos type of partition table. It didn't do anything for a long time after I clicked "Apply," so I assumed that there was an error. I then realized, after clicking out of the window to make a new partition table, that GParted did not find my hard drive, only my Live USB. In case this problem was unique to Puppy, I tried it in Slitaz again (with GParted and fdisk). Same result, no hard drive found. Finally, I wondered if the Crunchbang installer would automatically partition the hard drive. I thought that it would be able to do it, but then it asked where to do the partitioning, and the only option was the Live USB.

So that's my story...I hope it will hope some. And yes, it does work if I use a Live USB. I'm using it with Crunchbang to type this.

I would suspect that the harddisk is damaged. The driver for the disk-controller is available which you can see here
Code:
00:14.1 IDE interface: ATI Technologies Inc Dual Channel Bus Master PCI IDE Controller
Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device ff00
	Kernel driver in use: pata_atiixp
Is it possible for you to insert another disk and try if it's recognized by the system?

I remember that I've once read it would be possible to delete data on a harddisk in a way that it is no longer recognized. But as far as I know this is not possible with the tools you were using (gparted and fdisk).

Hi,

As you might have seen in the command output you posted, the disk is picked up by your system but fails with multiple I/O errors.

I agree with markush that this this might be damaged. Looking at the text you posted (post #5) I also believe that it was not caused by any action on your side, it might have brought these imminent errors to the service a bit earlier, but this would have surfaced sooner or later.

My advise: Don't spend too much time on this disk, get yourself a new one. I do assume that the disk does not contain very important data. If that is the case: Don't tinker with the disk yourself any further, but get in touch with some professional company that is specialized in retrieving data from damaged disks. This might not be cheap, though......

You have a lot of "I/O error, dev sda", so I believe markush is right.
You could try to empty it completely, but don't give it to much hope.
Something like
"# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda
** BEWARE! DON'T do this if you are not very very sure that /dev/sda is a disk you can empty! There is very little chance you can get anything back after this operation! **
You can then also format a disk (rather partition) and manually mark bad parts - you'll have to google I don't remember much about this.
(In my experiemce there is a difference between Linux and Windows when it comes to handling damaged disks: Windows always shows every disk even if it can't be accessed in any way, Linux doesn't show disks that can't be accessed. Don't know if this is *always* a fact or just with my few faulty drives & Debian.)

first of all check whether your hard disk is now working or not.
check whether your BIOS... is recognizing your hard disk or not.

Hi,

I agree with baxzius, and if you open the computer, check if the cables are all properly plugged in.

The past few days, I've been using Puppy Linux since it can save to a USB drive. It seems to be working just fine, and it seems to be a better alternative than trying to open up my laptop. Thus, I will mark this thread as solved.

Thank you to all who tried to help!
