My good friend RAID-0

Hello y'all :-)

Second time poster, long-time listener. I love what y'all did with the place; exceptionally easy to use! :-)

-So my question is, I have an ASUS a8n-sli deluxe board.

-I have 3 IDE hard drives installed

HDD1=20GB (Primary Master)
HDD2=10 GB (Primary Slave)
HDD3=10 GB (Secondary Slave)

HDD2+3 are RAID-0 with Windows XP installed on them
HDD1 has Fedora core 4 installed on it

I would like to dual boot

Due to the ability to change the boot order of HDDs in my BIOS, I am able to easily switch between the two OSs. (That's right, I have two master boot records :-)

I would prefer not to have to access the BIOS every time I would like to switch, and since my head spins when reading about getting GRUB to detect RAID-0, I have decided to setup the dual-boot config through boot.ini

Ummm..... any Ideas how to do that?

I tried the generic "copy the first 512 bytes to the windows partition" and all I get is a "GRUB" on the screen and it simply hangs....

So, any ideas how to do this?

Thanks a bunch y'all
Jimbo

Is the grub on your screen followed by a '>'? Can you type stuff? If so, it hasn't actually hung, that's somewhere you can do something useful! RAID-0 is scary though so I don't have any experience to help you any further than that, but see if it's the grub prompt you're at when you try and boot. From there it's not too hard to install grub and fix the problem :)

Thanks for the respone :-)

Yeah, I set up RAID-0 because I didn't feel like buying new hard drives :-) And I absolutely hate Window$ but I'm still using it because I haven't quite transitioned yet. :-)

Yeah, I've pressed every key on the keyboard, but it doesn't respond back; I think it has something to do with the 1024 cylinder issue that certain BIOS's have.....

But I was thinking of and idea: would it work if I simply copied the grub installer to the c:\ and then mapped to it in the boot.ini file?

Thanks

Update on the dual boot...

Okay, I think I made it a little further :-)

I found this :
http://www.geocities.com/lode_leroy/grubinstall/

And I installed it :-) And it worked quite well. Now, when I select it, I get GRUB with a cursor next to it.....

Okay, now what? :-)

I can't help you with your question, but want to
caution you about using RAID-0 ... you are aware
of the fact that if ONE drive dies you loose ALL data?

Yes, you get a performance boost, but I wouldn't
think this is worth it. In fact, I'd dare say that of all
the RAID levels out there 0 is the single-most stupid
one people came up with. 1+0, 5, 10 (and a few
vendor-specific RAID levels) I can appreciate, but
0 makes me shudder :}

Cheers,
Tink

Hahahaa yeah, I realize that :-)

That's why I'm not putting anything but games on the box. I only use it for my graphics-intensive games with my 6600GT video card setup. It's mainly my "guinea pig" box.
