Unhappy my gateway E-4500S has no audio after install of Linux Mint Rebecca 17.1.

I downloaded Linux Mint 17.1 LTS Can anyone help me with this issue? in my Gateway E-4500S desktop today to replace windows 10 an all it's spyware and search ware, since down loading it have no more audio. the audio board is the sigmatel that came in this pc. it worked for a while but when the system downloaded several cinnamon updates it hasn't worked since. i have used Ubuntu14.1 LTS in the past in several pc's and i have never had this trouble before. I am at a complete loss as to how to fix the problem. Can anyone help me fix this issue? Thanks! Bill Huff

Some generic advice, as I have neither LM 17.1 nor sigmatel sound: right-click on the volume control applet.
1. ensure the proper sound device is selected
2. ensure the volume control(s) are set high enough to hear a sound.
All too often, when switching distros or doing an upgrade, my sound problems have come down to one of these two rather trivial problems
