My first problem is not related to Linux OS, but to the Java plugin in Firefox
 

Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca 32 bit, is functioning without problems, on my Acer Aspire 5602WLMi Laptop. I followed all recommendations on the website: sites.google.com/site/computertip/, a very helpfull site in dutch language. But in one point I did not succeed. With Windows XP OS, I used to play cards online on http://www.kaartspellen-online.nl/ Well, I tried to play the game in Linux, but it would not start because of Java was not installed. So I followed the instructions on the before mentioned website, and managed to install the appropiate Java applet, and activated the plugin 1.8.45 in Firefox. Everything ok I thought, but when starting the game I got the message: Game blocked by Java security. After reading several instructions of Java to this problem, the solution was to add the website of the game in the Java Control Panel, to the exception site list. So far so good, but the result was the same every time; the message: Game blocked by Java security. In the end I was tired of it, and I managed to play the game with the IcedTea 7 plugin, but I have always trouble with the picture "images/java_notfound.png" which is covering the middle of the playfield. I admit, this is a minor problem but to me very frustrating.

Yes, I've dealt with this on a few occasions myself. Oracle has tightened the security of Java with the release of version 8. Unfortunately, their approach, or perhaps bugs in the software, has led to the situation you've described. :(

What has worked for me in the past is to uninstall version 8, if that is what you have installed, and install version 7, which you can find here. Now, the version I've linked to appears to be 1.7.0_76. From what I understand here, starting with update 51, new security rules were implemented to forbid the program from running unsigned applets. Even still, I think versions after 51 are still easier than 8 to get things running. While version 7 is older and probably has more security holes, you might get more functionality. Kind of a trade off. ;)

For games I tend to add a workaround.conf file in /etc/ld.so.conf.d/ with the location of java's lib directory and run ldconfig.

# echo "/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre/lib/amd64" > /etc/ld.so.conf.d/workaround.conf
# ldconfig

Pretty much the same if I'm running oracles version, just a different location. The plugin for firefox ends up in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ in debian. Which tends to be a symlink to /etc/alternatives/... which is another symlink to the actual location. I'm a little rusty as to why I do this, but I think it had to do with opengl support (in browser) not working without it. Which you also need the jogl (java open gl) libs to have work.

# apt-get install libjogl2-java

For debian stable at least. YMMV. The workaround.conf is to help java find java. There's another trick for it by putting that in LD_PRELOAD or some such that doesn't require rootly actions. Plus other optimizations in shell variables as documented on most game forums that are java and browser based like runescape.

your reply was very helpfull, in the way that I easily installed oracle java version 7, and activated the Java(TM) Plugin 10.80.2 in Mozilla Firefox. But one thing I do not understand, the problem with the picture "java_notfound.png" is the same. Every time after starting the game, the picture shows up and blocks the middle of the playfield, and in that way playing the game is not possible. I managed to get rid of the picture by blocking all pictures in the game and starting the game again, but the next time I start the game, all pictures are gone, and I have again unblock the pictures to start the game, and then this "java_notfound.png" picture shows up again. I tried already everything to get rid of this picture but till now without result. Perhaps you have also a solution for this frustrating problem.

Some sites have started filtering based on the java version. Some of that is even built into the browser now. So you'll get messages like that when your java is not the "version" of java that they deem blessed. You should also check about:plugins to make sure the browser sees your java. And the java test page to verify that your java works.

and you end up installing the malicious code


also some advertising will try to trick you into "just clicking" on a link

another thing you can try:
- close your browser completely.
- open with an empty page (or at least not the java game page).
- from preferences => privacy: clear history when ff closes: offline website data, cookies, cache, active logins and site preferences
- close your browser completely.
- try again

this might have unpleasant but mostly harmless side effects on other sites.
if that worked, you can untick the boxes again.
