My card/monitor resolution not visible in Ubuntu 11.04 preferences->monitors

I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 on AMD K-7 system with Nvidia Geforce 4 MX4000 AGP card - Ubuntu is set to use the classic desktop. This is a fresh install with only updates done, but nothing else changed.

The problem is that system->preferences->monitors offers only 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and my monitor is 1920x1024.

There is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file in the system.

I'm including in this initial post the output from lspci and most of the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log (I removed the portion of Xorg.0.log towards the end pertaining to keyboard/mouse because this web page wouldn't accept the posting due to slightly excess length).

I believe I see in Xorg.0.log where my monitor is detected and the modelines including 1920x1024 appear, but these resolution(s) are not offered in system->preferences->monitors, and I've had similar problem on other similar machine, hence my plea for help.

Thank you,

lspci:

That's a problem. I would install the (ugh!) nvidia binary blob which is probably available as an Ubuntu package. My guess is you're on vesa or framebuffer which only know about 4:3 aspect ration in monitors as a rule, whereas yours is 16:9.

It starts the nouveau driver, so neither the nv nor the nvidia driver should be needed to run that card, since nouveau should be supporting the NV18 chip. But as you stated, installing the proprietary driver may help here.

wb0gaz 09-15-2011 03:13 PM

I tried nvidia-current.

It appears the problem is that nvidia-current's kernel driver does not support my video card (geforce4 mx4000) which is an older card. There is an error in kern.log to this effect, referring me to a legacy driver (which may/may not be compatible with the current Xorg environment, so I may have hit a dead with the nvidia-current driver.)

As for noveau, it does not seem to make available a normally-expected range of resolutions (I want 1920x1024 but only see 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768.) I don't think I'm running the VESA driver (which might have that limitation) so if anyone reading this can shed some light on noveau (or direct me to it's user community) that would be great.

Thanks

You have to use the nvidia-96 package with your card, it will work on Ubuntu 11.04 and is in the repositories.

wb0gaz 09-15-2011 08:10 PM

Thank you -

Here is the result when I tried to install nvidia-96 -

sudo apt-get install nvidia-96
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
nvidia-96 : Depends: xorg-video-abi-8.0 but it is not installable
Depends: xserver-xorg-core (>= 2:1.8.99.905-1ubuntu3) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

---

Does this appear to be solvable?

Thank you!

wb0gaz 09-15-2011 08:35 PM

Solved -

Turns out the card has two video outputs

The default setting for "Monitor Preferences" is "same image in all monitors".

Deselecting this, then selecting the appropriate monitor exposed the available resolutions.

So, in the end I can stay with out-of-the-box installation, but do need make this change to monitor preferences.

Thanks for your assistance!

Dave
