Music program

I have Ubuntu 12.04 Linux as my operating system. I am looking to find a music program that is compatible with this and will allow me create, record, edit and filter midi songs that I currently have and new ones I have yet to create. I also need to perform them live so a program that will allow me that as well would be great.

any help, tips or advice is appreciate.

Have a look at Ardour and LMMS, they might be what you are looking for.

Bariman, a professional musician, has published several podcasts at Hacker Public Radio about his Linux music setup:

I think you may find this one particularly useful: http://hackerpublicradio.org/eps.php?id=1347

Timidity, fluidsynth, hextor, hydrogen, rosegarden, ardour, audacity, and all the usual ccrma stuff. OpenOctave was an interesting one not too long ago, a fork of rosegarden to focus more on the midi side.
