Music CD's & Modems in Mandrake
 

I've installed Linux Mandrake 8.1 and modem soundboard & CD-DVD player were recognaized, i.e. they appear in the HARDDRAKE box. :)
My problem is that when I try to mount a music CD I get the error message

FILESYSTEM NOT KNOWN OR NOT ESPECIFIED

The modem its not working under linux neither, so how I can fix this???:confused:

You can't mount audio cds. You have to use a program to play them.
What kind of modem is it?

Just to clarify the situation for you. Although it may appear that you are mounting a CD or a DVD, or indeed, a Windows partition - you are not. You are actually mounting the filesystem that resides on that device/partition (that is why you must format a disk before you can read/write files on it - it needs a filesystem). Now, audio CDs do not have filesystems on them since they contain (almost) raw data.

Sorry for insisting on that but in my work I have a workstation with RedHat 9.something, and there I can mount, read & listen music CDs. How comes I can't do it with Mandrake 8.1? :confused:
(By the way, the bells of the system works)

My computer is a Laptop Dell Latitude LS, P3 400 MHz, and what HardDrake says is the following:
Modem ---> Lucent LT WinModem 56 K
SoundCard -----> NeoMagic MagicMedia 256 PCI Audio.
NET -----> 3Com Corp. 3c 905-TX (Fast Etherlink)

OK, I'll try...

Your audio CDs do not contain a filesystem. This is fact, it is non-negiotiable. There are, however, many fancy things that make it appear as if your audio CDs contain a filesystem. There is, firstly, CDfs, which, as the name suggests, provides a fs for CDs. I've not used it, but the docs show that it will display audio tracks as .wav files, and so on. If you use KDE, you can also install IOSlaves. There is an IOSlave for accessing CDs in Konqueror... you would browse to cd:// and low and behold, you'd be presented with a set of subdirs for WAV, MP3 and OGG files. If you played the mp3/ogg files, or you copied them to your harddrive, then it would do the ripping and encoding on the fly for you. The point stands, however, that the discs themselves do not contain a filesystem and so, under normal circumstances, cannot be mounted.

However, are you really asking about mounting audio CDs or are you just wanting to listen to them? If it is the latter, then fear not my friend! There are plenty of CD playing utils around, and even XMMS (the Winamp looky-likey) can play them! If your drive has the audio-cable plugged in, then just make sure the volume is up in the mixer and play! If you have no audio-cable, then you can download a special plugin for XMMS that lets you play CDs by ripping the data from them on the fly.
