Question multiple sounds

In Win98 when I listen to winamp, I can still hear AIM ringing.

In Linux when I run XMMS I don't hear any incoming messages from GAIM (I hear them when XMMS isn't playing).

Can anyone please help me?

You need to use a soundserver (a program which manages accesses to the sound device) and the appropiate plugin for xmms. If you use kde try the arts plugin and start the artsdemon.
There are also several other like esound.
