So, I used linux as my primary OS for a while, then I got my new laptop... with vista. Unfortunately until only recently did I get a chance to UPGRADE it to ubuntu 8.10. However I ran into some odd nicks that I had never seen before.
VIDEO:
Alright so I have a decent card for a laptop, the ATI Mobility radeo HD 3400 series. 256 mb.
Problem:
FIrst off, using any tool they all detect my external monitor to be a maximum of 1024 x 768. BUT i know it has a max res of 1280 x 1024. I can reach this with my old comp not my new comp. but my new comp can reach above these levels. Whe I enter into the gnome display manager, I simply see one monitor, although there are two, and it is marked as unknown. Not particularly helpful. Also I would like to dual screen if possible, but I prefer the Windows way, rather than bigdesktop. Also any video plays very poorly, and blacks out all the time.
Sound:
This is a much simpler question: The sound located that i change using the simple sound mixer, is not the one I want, as it mixes up other things. How can I change it?
Drivers:
SD and Memory stick drivers?
Razer devices configuration manager?
Okay, thanks for all the help, and please tell me if something is unclear.
EDIT:
Razer devices are the razer mous the copperhead, and the razer lycosa keyboard.
Yes, I did install the drivers, and have tried all the settings for boosting performance
Sound - Simply change the master sound, so i do not need to enter into the mixer.
When I plug in headphones, the stereo continues playing on anyways.
INTERNET: is 802.11n supported at all? I get very weak connections even for g though... not sure. Is there a way to boost output?
Distribution: openSuSE 11.0, Granular 1.0, Mandriva One 2009, Fedora 11

For your video card, have you tried installing the ATI drivers using Synaptic Package Manager? Just like in Windows, the official ATI drivers in Linux also bundle with them the well-known "ATI Catalyst".
I've never needed to worry about drivers for a memory card reader.. Maybe it doesn't recognize the card reader hardware in your system.
Post the output of: lspci lsusb
Razor Devices ? what is that.. When I search all I come up with are implements for removing a beard.
You need to provide more information with better descriptions.
