mtink ink monitoring on Ubuntu

On Ubuntu Edgy, printer Epson DX4800 works fine, but was looking for an ink monitor. Found mtink, installed with Synaptic Manager; GIMP shows ink monitor under Extns, but nothing happens when it is elected. Command line call to mtink results in

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

Error: Can't open display: :0.0

The same error message occurs whether called as sudo or not

Found one post related to this, but no resolution

Thought it might be a display problem, but all dependencies seem to have installed. mtinkd creates a file lp0 in /var/mtink though I don't know whether that's relevant.

Any thoughts?

David
