mtab is a directory error on boot..

I recently have been getting mtab is a directory error when I boot..Instead of /etc/mtab
there is /etc/mtab/hermes.h there is no /etc/mtab anymore..Not sure if this happened when I installed 2.6.29 kernel I built..Other then the mtab error on boot..everything seems to work..Its ran a fsck and failed and dropped me into maintenance mode where i ran fsck /dev/sda1 and it found errors ..said mtab is 2 when it should be 1..asked if i want to fix enter "y" and it proceeded to fix a bunch of errors..about a dozen or so..rebooted but still get mtab error

'hermes.h' can be a kernel file ...
'linux-2.x.xx.x/drivers/net/wireless/hermes.h' .

But it shouldn't be in /etc.

Suggest : access your system from a live Linux
cd / DVD, and delete mtab/ ,
next 'touch //etc/mtab' to create a new empty
text file 'mtab'.
.....
