Question MS Outlook fails to connect in XP Virtual Machine

problem: ms outlook does not connect to mail server (pop/smtp) in XP virtual machine.

error msg: Task 'mail- Receiving' reported error (0x80040600): 'The server name you entered can not be found on the network (it might be down temporarily). Please verify that you are online and that the server name is correct.'

context: XP virtual machine running within host Ubuntu; Ethernet device connected as NAT (Bridged doesn't work); internet websites connect fine; network adapter is VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet Adapter; verified server spelling- yes; verified connect -yes.
