how do I open a ms-dos executable 32 bit file. it ran ok on windows 7 32 bit
I think I am running ubuntu ver 12.4 I tried to upgrade to ver 14.0. how do I FIND OUT WHAT VER. I HAVE?

Of course MSDOS executable files are not designed to run on Linux, they are designed to run on Microsoft operating systems. However, you might be able to use WINE, which does its best to run MSDOS programmes. There is no guarantee that it will work, depending on what it is that you are running.

You can install WINE from the Ubuntu Software Center. Once it has been installed, start it from the Application launcher (on stock Ubuntu, that's the Ubuntu logo in the upper left corner of the screen).

WINE will probably ask you for permission to install some support files (gecko and some other things). Let it do that.

After all that is finished, try starting your MSDOS programme; as long as it is a .EXE file, it should launch (or attempt to launch, anyway) using WINE as its fake-Windows system.

Depending on the application, I have had both good and bad luck with WINE, so your mileage may vary. Definitely worth a shot, though!

I USED WINE AND GOT THIS MESSAGE "GAME IS ALLREADY RUNNING , CLOSE IF YOU WANT TO CONTINUE. I COULDN'T FIND IT RUNNING ANYWHERE"

If wine doesn't work you could try DOSBOX. It is generally supposed to be good for running games and AFAIK.

Thank you jdkaye. I appreciate any advice given. I was being lazy by not unclicking caps lock. I was a carpenter for 40 years and my fingers tips are large and it is easy to hit several keys at the same time. I will double check my one finger typing skills.

This is not meant to be an excuse, I am 79 years and am still learning from others, so please excuse my gaffs
