Unhappy Mplayer won't launch

Mplayer has been working for me on my Fedora Core 2 machine. Last night I did some updating and now today mplayer will not launch. When I try to launch it from a terminal it says 'Bus error'. Anyone with any ideas? What is a bus error anyway?

Hi!

"Bus Error" means that you run Linux on something other than an x86 platform. I have described it earlier, here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...546#post662546

But this doesn't explain why you get this error. Maybe you upgraded some kind of library that broke mplayer? Try recompiling mplayer.

Good luck!

Hi and thank you for your reply.

I tried reinstalling mplayer using apt and I got this:

While preparing for installation:

mplayer-1.0-0.11.pre5.1.fc2.fr
/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.94158: line 1: 2755 Bus error /sbin/ldconfig 2>/dev/null
error: %post(mplayer-1.0-0.11.pre5.1.fc2.fr) scriptlet failed, exit status 135

I tried installing xine and got something similar:

While installing package libfame-0.9.1-2.1.fc2.fr:

/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.54474: line 1: 7795 Bus error /sbin/ldconfig
error: %post(libfame-0.9.1-2.1.fc2.fr) scriptlet failed, exit status 135

While installing package xine-lib-1.0.0-0.14.rc6a.1.fc2.fr:

/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.64338: line 1: 7797 Bus error /sbin/ldconfig 2>/dev/null
error: %post(xine-lib-1.0.0-0.14.rc6a.1.fc2.fr) scriptlet failed, exit status 135

What does this mean? And does this point to the problem so it can be fixed?

It seems that ldconfig crashes. Weird ... What happens if root executes this command?
/sbin/ldconfig -v

If that indeed does crash, try getting rid of the cache file it uses and execute it again:
mv /etc/ld.so.cache /etc/ld.so.cache_OLD
/sbin/ldconfig -v

Any luck?
